Thank You, Mr. Officer, Sir

You know how there are things you do every day?  You don't even think about it.  It's an automatic thing.  Kind of like washing your hair in the shower.  Sometimes I get out of the shower and wonder if I washed my hair, it's such a habit I just do it.

Well, this morning I was driving to work, like I do everyday- north on Ammon, left onto 1st street, past Tiebreaker and stopped at the light at Hitt.  I glanced into my rear view mirror and noticed a big black police truck behind me.  I didn't even think twice about it.  The light turned green and I proceeded through the light.  At this point, I have no idea what I was thinking.  I was just habitually driving down 1st toward Woodruff...like I do every single day.  I drove about 100 yards and just happened to glance in my rear view again and notice he has his lights on.  My stomach hits the floor.

I immediately take a quick glance around me and pull over to the side, right by the school crosswalk.  I was speeding in a school zone with a cop behind me!?!?!  A school zone I drive through every day- sometimes twice a day.  WHAT THE WHAT!?!?!

I have a thing about school zones.  I try my hardest to observe speed limits in school zones.  If someone is behind me and tailgating me because I'm actually going 20, I will go even slower.  School zones are not a place to push the speed limit.  Kids die because people are stupid and speed through school zones.

So, I have no idea what I was doing/thinking this morning.

I pull out my license and put down my window as the cop comes up to the side of my car.  "Did you know this is a school zone?" he asks as he takes my license.

"Yes," I answer, "I have no idea what I was thinking.  I drive through here everyday and  I never speed.  I know better. I'm so sorry."  I was so shocked that everything I was thinking was coming out of my mouth.  Then I thought I might even cry.

"I kept thinking you were going to slow down because I was right behind you-- and then you just kept going. Where are you headed?"

"To work downtown."  I'm on the verge of tears now.

"Well, I won't give you the $140 ticket this morning for speeding in a school zone.  Just slow down." He hands me back my license.

"I will. Thank you officer."  I roll up my window and he walks back to his pickup truck.

I have no idea why he didn't give me the ticket.  I deserved it but I am so grateful he didn't.  I certainly don't have $140 I don't know what to do with.

So-  I just wanna say a big Thank You to the Mr. Policeman who pulled me over this morning.

A Walk Around

I went for a walk around downtown today on my lunch hour.  I had to.  I need all the points I can get and I knew I would be busy tonight.  So, I ate my lunch, read my 2 chapters, put on my coat and headed out into the sunshine.

It started out almost perfect, as I headed toward the river, walking beside the buildings that were reflecting the sunshine back onto me.  It was just a little cold and it felt great to have the sun on my face.  Then I rounded the corner to walk toward the temple and a blast of fridged cold air stung my nose and ears.  But I didn't mind, it was going to be a short walk.

I walked around downtown for about 20 minutes, wandering up and down streets and taking random left and right turns.  I was getting colder and colder. Finally, I headed back.

I started thinking about winters as a kid.  Sometimes my brothers, sisters and I would bundle up and take the sleds out into the freezing snow.  We would use the dry canal banks by our house as our sledding hills and spend time creating the perfect place for winter fun.  When we got older, we would get out the four wheeler or snowmobile, whichever was handy, and hook sleds or tubes onto the back and go for rides out in the hay field beside our house.  Then when we'd get cold, so cold that our fingers froze and it felt like our ears would fall off, we'd head back to the house for some hot chocolate or warm cookies.

It's been cold here lately, so cold that by the time I finished my walk I felt like I did back then and the nostalgia almost did me in. But this time there was no hot chocolate or warm cookies, sometimes growing up is a hard thing to swallow.

Does Bacon Really Make Everything Taste Better?

I saw this article on the NPR website this morning.  I like chocolate and I like bacon-- but together?

I'm not convinced-- even though the picture looks kind of yummy.

Does anyone want to choose a recipe, try it and let me know how it is?  I'm skeptical.

"But I Can't Stand Aunt Edna's Gravy......

So I thought I'd bring my own."

Not if you're flying, you're not.

TSA Helpful Hints for Holiday Travelers--

Traveling with Food

Everyone has favorite foods from home that they want to bring to holiday dinners, or items from their destination that they want to bring back home. Travelers should know that while pies are permitted through the security checkpoint, here is a list of liquids, gels and aerosol items that you should put in your checked bag, ship ahead, or leave at home.
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Creamy dips and spreads
    (cheeses, peanut butter, etc.)
  • Gift baskets with food items
    (salsa, jams and salad dressings)
  • Gravy
  • Jams
  • Jellies
  • Maple syrup
  • Oils and vinegars
  • Salad dressing
  • Salsa
  • Sauces
  • Soups
  • Wine, liquor and beer

Really? Do people try to carry on all these items?  Well, maybe.

But the image of a cute little grandma bringing a crock pot of soup on board a plane just cracked me up.

Don't ask my why....sometimes I'm easily amused.
